How does the neck cope with heavy strings and open A tuning?

@TheMullerFan Very well, I didn't even need to readjust (the low E is tuned down to a lower A so that reduces tension a lot as I didn't bother putting an extra heavy string)

Hey man, I'm glad I found this video. I've been wondering how Joe gets that very heavy sound from his tuning. I understand the bottom string in open A is the E string tuned regularly, but you tune it down to A. I've tried doing this with a couple of my guitars, and both times I notice that the particular string won't even really intonate beyond the third fret. Do you just use it as a drone sound or do you spend a lot of time playing on that bottom string?
