Today is two hundred and sixty-four in the series. Today we will continue a series that focuses on the displays and decorations for Hinamatsuri or the Doll Festival in Japan.
Hinamatsuri is March 3rd. It is a very important holiday in Japan. It is not, however, a national holiday. It is sometimes called Girls' Day when translated. Really from mid-February families that have young girls will put out these dolls to honor their daughters. The displays can be very simple or very elaborate. Girls love to look at the pretty dolls and they are sometimes given small gifts on the 3rd.
There are many variations to the display of the dolls. Today we will begin making all of the doll figures for the five tier display. Today's dolls are the Emperor (Odairisama) and the Empress (Ohinasama). The beginning folds for all of these dolls are the same so as you get used to the folds the rest of the set should go fairly easily.
