Levada dos Piornais

This was our first excursion onto the Madeiran Levadas. This is part of the Levada dos Piornais where it winds up the Socorridos Valley after leaving the banana plantations. Its a good job Hilary is ok on heights because I am not. The toughest bit was after passing through the tunnel and finding the levada was suspended in mid air and where I expected the rockface to be was a gap with a 500ft drop to the side!

@kevinvdp92, yes! :) We see strange people all day long in the levadas, but this one particularly is dangerous, has it’s in the middle of a very bad neighbor.

Bring a knife and do not walk alone… 

@kevinvdp92 some months ago there were some cases of robbery in this particular levada in Funchal but later the police caught them. Recently i haven't heard in the news of such occurences.

@marduck71 What do you mean? That there's thieves who go on these levadas to rob tourists?

Pretty amazing. I did some "classics" like 25 fontes and Caldeirao Verde last summer. Really enjoyed it. Sadly enough, I just heard there's been 2 death now at this Levada dos Piornais, 2 Danish tourists who fell down..

i did enjoy your video...remenber me ,when i did pass many and many years ago.and i did pass about 4 years ago...realy amazing levada...we can have a few choises to change the curso of walk...well done people
