Hopefully soon stem cell research and gene therapy will wipe out these kinds of disease forever, slowly removing fear mongering and self aggrandizing individuals from giving speeches that are laughable at best.
As a parent with a deaf child, I have a vast understanding about technology for improving hearing. The technolgy is changing and the science is moving forward that can cure hearing loss. University of Michigan Hospital has a patent pending for a vitamin that can cure some hearing loss. I would never seek a Cochlear Implant and rule out future technology or a cure. Americans we need to protect our children and send a message against this type of legislation.
@Liberty4DeafKids So you are saying that because 500 people have not had success with this technology nobody should attempt it until they are adults? I can tell you for a fact that results are far better the younger the implant is done. In the end the parents have the right to choose for their children. This is what they call parenting. If a hearing parent has a child that is a good candidate for an implant, 99 times out of 100 they will choose the implant. Why wouldnt they?
@peterb362 Peter, do you call this 100% evidence based on one study, the biased and conclusive proof? You've got to be kidding me! I have over 500 files of unhappy children with CIs. Please don't be a sheeple and blind to ugly truths. (SMH) thank god, my husband is not like you. He's into research and strong PRO-facts.
@Liberty4DeafKids Take a look at these video's-"Learning to Listen", " Amelia's Cochlear Journey" Here is some fact. Now could you answer my question?
@peterb362, try using HA on another side of ear? Its true, they wld be unable to hear if CIs do not work on them. Why go thru all that? My belief, its best to wait til they are old enough to be 100% informed. It won't make any difference if gets CI at young or old age. Same results. I have 110 db - close to profound hearing level, I'm still happy with my powerful digital HA and have a very good job. =D
@peterb362 "why are hundreds of thousands of deaf people having this procedure done?" Let me ask you this rhetorical question, why do they still remove CIs? stop using & surgically removed 'em? it's becuz of money talks, parents' agreement to take consent away from children. They believe doctors that their child's inability to hear wld lead to failure. I see fearmongering here too. I would love to see factual evidence of results! been looking for it everywhere, can u find one for me?
@Liberty4DeafKids I 100% agree with CI babies learning sign. They are still deaf children. When the ir CI is not on they can't hear. Yes, I am a huge supporter of sign. I am also a huge supporter of CI technology.
@peter Is your child learning sign language becuz that will boost her/his confidence to speak more than English speaking only. BiLingual kids w/ CIs are so bright! Even tho I still do not agree on CIs for babies.
@Liberty4DeafKids Hearing aids do not work for everyone. If there are no hair cells in the cochlea to begin with in the case of (Connexin 26) patients they will never hear anyway no matter how long they wait. "their little precious hair inside their cochlea will be shaved off. They'd never be able to hear again." Lovely quote. Hear what? remember they are deaf. Fear mongering.
