In the oldest high school shot-put film on YouTube, Vic Damon of Southwest High in Kansas City, MO, USA, shows a refined version of the classic Parry O'Brien Shot-Put Glide. Despite lacking brute strength and weighing a slight 182 lbs., the 6'1" Damon used this technique to become the first Greater Kansas City high school athlete to break the 60-foot barrier with the 12-pound shot. He went on to win the Missouri State meet in an undefeated season where his best mark was 60'5". The year was 1963.

This 8mm silent-film footage should live on as inspiration for many shot-putters of both sexes, in high school or college, who have not fully embraced the modern Rotational (or Spin) shot-put technique that first appeared in the mid-1970's. While not entirely flawless as shown here, Damon's form has four key elements: (1) an extremely fast, smooth, and controlled glide into throwing stance, completely without a hitch or slightest hesitation, (2) a bent throwing arm held at an approximately 90-degree alignment with the spine throughout, (3) a full 180-degree shoulder rotation that begins, again without hitch or hesitation, in perfect unison with hip rotation, and (4) a final thrust of the shot with elbow still held high in that 90-degree alignment with the spine.
Metric conversions from above text: 60 feet = 18.29 meters, 12-pound (lb.) = 5.44 kilograms, 182 lbs. = 82.55 kilograms, and 6'1" = 1.85 meters.
