Redskins sneak past Indians
Souderton - They say that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Nothing could have been more true tonight on a hot, muggy evening in Souderton.
For the Neshaminy Redskins, the 2010 season is all about new. 2010 begins a new decade of football. Neshaminy has a new wall of fame and we have a brand new scoreboard. Neshaminy also has a number of new contributing players on the team this year.
So as we strapped ourselves in tonight, and prepared to watch a football game, we thought we'd get something new. However, there was nothing new about what took place on the field tonight.
On this night, Redskins football, played the way it's been played for decades, prevailed once again to the tune of a 21-19 win that was a thriller to watch.
Neshaminy's 2010 season opener can be summed up in one phrase: heart pounding, roller coaster emotions, nail biting, white knuckled, edge of your seat football. Well, just pick the phrase that best described your experience this evening. For most of us who were in attendance, the Redskins on the field, gave the fans in the seats all of those emotions and more.
After falling behind by a score of 6-0 in the first quarter, Neshaminy scored 3 touchdowns in a frenzied 12 minute span during the first half to take a 21-6 lead into the locker room.
Neshaminy's 1st touchdown was a 35 yard strike from Charlie Marterella to Sean Ulmer in the end zone for 7 points. A perfect pass by Marterella was completed when Ulmer hauled in the ball while wearing a defenseman on his back. Next, Anthony 'Woody' Woodroffe scored the Redskins second touchdown with a strong run up the middle from the 3-yard line. Woodroffe had a number of impressive carries during the drive that put Neshaminy in scoring position. The final Redskins score came from a 24 yard run by Corey Majors. Majors broke several tackles and plowed through the Indians defense like a man who could not be denied as he powered his way into the end zone.
The Redskins then rode out a wild 2nd half that saw the Indians score twice and close the game to within 2 points with 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Neshaminy had an opportunity to put the game away for good late in the 4th quarter when they marched down to the Souderton 4-yard line with under 4 minutes to go. The Indians defense, with their backs on their own goal line, rose to the occasion and held the Redskins off the scoreboard and took possession of the ball with 2:26 to go in the game.
With the game on the line and the clock ticking away, Souderton quickly marched to midfield, and appeared poised to strike again. This time, however, it was the Redskins defense who came up big and stopped the Indians on 4th down in the closing minutes. Neshaminy took possession of the ball, and the game, as they ran out the clock and preserved a well fought win on the road against a solid opponent.
Next week the Redskins travel to Hatboro-Horsham for the second game of this young 2010 season, and then on Thursday, September 16, Neshaminy celebrates their 2010 home opener against Central Bucks East with the unveiling of the new scoreboard, the newly constructed Redskins Wall of Fame and the new John Petercuskie statue.
