Doctors take a transient ischemic attack or "mini stroke" very seriously. While the event itself is benign, a TIA is a predictor that another stroke could happen soon. Five percent of people who suffer TIAs have another stroke within 48 hours. Ten percent of TIA patients have a stroke within the next 90 days. Dr. Pierre Fayad, medical director of The Nebraska Medical Center stroke center says patients who come to hospital emergency rooms with TIA symptoms are usually admitted to the hospital and treated. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Many of those strokes are preventable.
