Actually, it is the blind following of, and the overzealous belief in religious dogma that has greatly hindered mankind's intellectual development over the centuries and subsequent exploration into exobiology specifically, and astronomy in general. The Vatican only in the past decade officially declared that Earth and the other planets revolve around the Sun, centuries after sentencing people to house arrest and even death for voicing their belief of the same.
