Dr. Ken Carter, associate professor of psychology at Oxford College (of Emory University), talks about teaching and learning in an intensive liberal arts environment. He should know. Twenty-five years ago, he was a student at Oxford. Now he teaches introductory and abnormal psychology, as well as clinical neuroscience. His research area is in psychopharmacology, the study of psychiatric medicines, and his work helps providers find the most effective treatment for their patients. Biography: Dr. Ken Carter received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and has recently finished a postdoctoral masters degree in clinical psychopharmocology from Farligh Dickenson University. Before joining the faculty at Emory University, Dr. Carter served as a Senior Assistant Research Scientist in the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Carter has been a psychotherapist and researcher for over 13 years and his work has garnered awards from the National Institutes of Health, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and the University of Michigan. In 1994 Ebony Magazine named him a "Leader of Tomorrow" and he has served as a Georgia Governor's Teaching Fellow. Dr. Carter has presented in numerous of professional conferences in the areas of social and personality influences on health as well as on new technologies in teaching. In addition to research, Dr. Carters is actively engaged in translating research in psychology to everyday language. He has appeared in magazines such as mental_floss and Readers Digest, and well as in news programs such as Connect With Kids and NBCs Today Show.
