"IN THE CROSS OF CHRIST I GLORY" A New Hymn on Galatians 6:14 - Words and Music by hymn writer, Kathleen Shea Vick, of Columbus, Ohio. Let me begin by saying thank you to Pastor Don Fortner of Grace Baptist Church in Danville, KY for his wonderful sermon on Galatians 6:14, entitled, "GLORYING IN THE CROSS". I hope you will want to hear this great message for yourself at: http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=920081420504

Now a word about the music. Pick up any modern hymnbook and search for an hymn on Galatians 6:14. You will find that the Gospel truth of this verse is hidden in music that claims to express it. Most so-called "sacred" songs that claim any reference to Galatians 6:14 reduce the truth of God's Word to nothing more than making the physical cross an image of idolatrous worship. Crosses here! Crosses there! Crosses, crosses everywhere: necklaces, ankle bracelets, earrings, billboards, churches, hospitals; and don't forget vampire movies.

Is the cross just a symbol of pop culture? Is it's meaning a relative thing? Is it okay to believe whatever you want to believe? "Oh yeah, the cross. It has something to do with Jesus, that's cool."

Please listen. What you know about and believe about the cross of our LORD Jesus Christ will determine your eternal destiny. It's the most important thing in the whole world.

Okay. So, what is the cross all about? And what does it mean to "glory in the cross?"

I'm so glad you asked! The Bible plainly declares it's meaning: THE CROSS IS A PROCLAMATION FROM THE LORD TO ALL MANKIND. The cross is a declaration, throughout all time, that God has fully accomplished all that He intended to accomplish - that is, He has saved the "Israel of God - Jacob's Chosen Race" from their sin forevermore in the sacrifice of Himself at the cross. The sin of God's elect people where laid on Him and His marvelous death satisfied God's perfect justice on their behalf.

Did Christ die "for all"? Yes! ALL that the Father had given to the Son before the world began are recipients of the gift of eternal life in the forgiveness of sin, as John 6:37 declares. The LORD Jesus came "to save His people from their sins" Matthew 1:21. And He accomplished this great work with infinite perfection.

And now, what does it mean to "glory in the cross"? Well, every true believer, every blood-bought sinner, every soul saved from eternal hell and death will "glory in the cross". Oh yes, the Bible verse from Galatians 6:14 is unspeakably vast. How could it possibly be put into words? Thousands and thousands of Bible teachers, preachers and theologians have tackled it. How could someone like me be so bold as to write an hymn based on that verse? How could a nobody like me put such a verse into words?

Yes, it's true. I am nobody. I'm just the offscouring.

But, that's precisely it! At the cross of our LORD Jesus Christ, the poor, homeless, fatherless, destitute, broken, blind, imprisoned, starving sinner can ascend from the dunghill to the highest heights of heavenly glory. The lame and the leprous are welcome to dine at the table of the King of Glory forevermore. The nothings, the nobodies, can be embraced by God Himself in holiness and perfect righteousness. All our filthy garments made clean and white.

How? The King of Glory became nobody, nothing. He became sin...for me.

Can anything in this old world compare with that?

Is it any wonder, that every time I think on those words,"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our LORD Jesus Christ, by Whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world", I want to sing!

And maybe you want to sing, too. If you do, here's the music: http://media.sermonaudio.com/articles/ar-11810151242-1.PDF

Would you like to hear more of the preaching of God's Word on the essential teaching of God's Word, that the God of the Bible is the God of the Hebrews. But, who are the Hebrews? Don Fortner answers the question in his sermon entitled, "WHO ARE THE HEBREWS?" http://www.sermonaudio.com/playpopup.asp?SID=11290611655

May the LORD bless you, whoever you are, as you seek the LORD as He reveals Himself in His Holy Word, The Bible.

Additional note pursuant to the comment thread on "Noah's Ark" - Here is a wonderful sermon on the subject of "The Ark of God, Our LORD Jesus Christ". It was delivered on March 13, 2011, the Sunday following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The sermon is entitled, "THE FLOOD OF GOD'S WRATH", from Pastor David Eddmenson of Grace Baptist Church in New Caney, Texas: http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=315111421406

  • PART 15 All sinners hate the truth of God unless God Himself has taken away a person's sin by the atoning blood of the Lamb of God and has given that soul a love of the truth. Who will believe and love God? All those for whom Christ died. That’s the message I tried to convey in my hymn, “In The Cross of Christ I Glory”. Thank you, again, for writing and please, read God's Word for yourself, putting away the foolishness of man's reason. God's Word is true and all men are liars.

  • PART 14 Last, all believers who have “found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (Genesis 6:8), like Noah, are building a great ark by God’s command throughout all time. We all are telling the whole world, “There is a Saviour. His Name is JESUS.” No one can believe His Word and understand unless God Himself reveals Christ. Remember, the LORD Jesus told Nicodemus, “You must be born from above, or you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” John 3:3.

  • PART 13 The LORD spoke in parables, telling us that we are sinners and that there is a way of escape. The ark, the flood and the renewing of the earth is a picture of the final judgment and of the new heaven and earth that will replace this sin-cursed earth when Christ returns in all His glory.

  • PART 12 The drunken episode in the life of Noah occurred AFTER the flood. Gen. 9:20-29. This curious event, absolutely true in its historic detail, provides a gracious picture to us of the mercy of Shem and Japheth and the wickedness of Ham. Sin was not erased from the earth when the floodwaters withdrew.

  • PART 11 The races that would eventually populate the whole earth are outlined in Gen.10. All mankind are the progeny of Ham, Shem and Japheth, but more than this, all mankind are the progeny of fallen Adam and his wife, Eve. Noah was their descendant. All human beings are sinners like Adam and Eve and Noah and his sons. All are strangers to God, but the LORD will show mercy on the “sons of Jacob”, God’s name for His elect people. Isaiah 49:6

  • PART 10 The dinosaurs? All creatures on the ark lived. Many, many animals have become extinct since the flood.

  • PART 9 There was no killing or devouring of flesh on the ark, because the ark is a parable of the Kingdom of God. It represents the Body of Christ. All who enter in are recipients of eternal life and are saved from death, hell and eternal destruction. “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My Holy Mountain” Isaiah 11:9 What animal could enter into the ark and then be torn apart, killed and devoured? No way!

  • PART 8 The LORD provided food for Noah, his family and all the animals during their time in the ark, as well as throughout their entire lives on earth. All ate and were satisfied with what the LORD had provided.

  • PART 7 The LORD is sovereign in all things. Note how He gave the command for Noah and his wife and his 3 sons and their wives to enter into the ark. The command was given and the rain began to fall. It was all God’s doing. Genesis 7:16 says “…and the LORD shut him in.”

  • PART 6 The animals were gathered together by the LORD and brought to the ark. The great caravan of creatures was loaded into the ark by the Spirit of Christ. Unclean beasts (2 of every kind) and clean beasts (seven of every kind). After the floodwaters receded, Noah presented burnt offerings to the LORD of the clean animals. Think about this.
