I met up with Max Keiser whilst he was recording his show for Resonance Fm in London. Having listened to his radio show for a while, I knew that he would have a great perspective on most things. Max chose to talk about his concern about copyright law. If you don't know he is putting together a site called www.piratemyfilm.com

He recommended Stacy herbert as the smartest person he knows. In order for the chain to develop I will now try to interview Stacy...

Extra-Ordinary is a project in which I ask people two main questions.

What concerns you today?
and
Who is the smartest person you know?

The idea being that I will interview the person that they say is the smartest person they know.

  • I think the point also is that copyright is a distinct product of capitalism. Capitalism in its traditional form is now finished. Hence we are in a position where can overhaul the system and re-organise our resources in order to achieve these efficiencies and ultimately reap the benefits.

  • I think copyright enables people to make massive amounts of money off of your hard work. The power is just centralised and entrenched. Thus acceptable.

  • Very good point MAX imum

  • awesome project. i would really like to hear stacy go on a rant.

copyright is an interesting issue. ive been indoctrinated with the belief that copyright rewards innovators and protects their incentives by providing entitlement of profit. however, it seems this ideal has been perverted by powerful entities and it is no longer a valid perspective.

  • Oh this is annoying.

I put it up but I put the wrong audio over it. The audio I used was for something else. ¬_¬

I'll do it again soon, if my mic starts woing again, when it's up I'l be sure to message you.

  • I guess what Max meant was if you take other people's intellectual property to make it better etc.. don't make profit off of it, release it as open source betterment of humanity, and it should be ok.

  • Instead of healing millions, only the ones who can afford it gets the treatment. Who benefits the most? So we as society have to work out where to draw the line on patenting and who has the right to withhold information that can benefit humanity. We must also prevent corporations from patenting more and more of us at a cultural, societal, and biological level.

  • They are not doing this only with songs, but with things like herbs, crops and even genes. Some "new" medicines discovered have actually been in used in other cultures for hundreds of years. Giving no credit to the indigenous people who use them, they patent and profit off it. A scientist may discover a gene that causes cancer and finds a way to treat it. But a corporation comes along and patents it.

  • Great interview! Thanks for sharing! I think Max touched on a very good point about taking the song from the Lion King that had belonged to the African people. Corporations instead of them working hard to create things, steals things from other cultures and patents them; and sues anyone else who uses it without their authority, including the people who they stole it from!
