After arguing about a parking ticket, Bill is locked up in a mental institution after a incident with the police. Meanwhile, Dave and Catherine try to spring him and Lisa and Joe take over Bill's show, leading Joe to adopt some outrageous on air tactics.

Jon Lovitz is the sixth SNL alumni on this show and will become a cast member in the fifth season.

The subplot with Beth outside the office gathering public feedback was designed so Vicki Lewis could shoot her scenes separately to accommodate her shooting schedule for the movie Godzilla.

This episode was turned into a VH1 bubble style pop-up video special. I was I could find it!

This is and is not NewsRadio's fiftieth episode. The Real Deal is NewsRadio's fiftieth aired episode, while Our Fiftieth Episode was the fiftieth episode produced.

There is a goof in the scene where Dave and Catherine are talking to Bill's doctor, with Bill and Fred(Jon Lovitz) arguing behind him. As Dave and Catherine stand up and Dave goes over to the window, the camera pulls back far enough that in the bottom left hand corner you can see that the wall separating them is fake.

Fred: We've even got the C.E.O. of a very successful intergalactic spice mining corporation.
The concept of a space based commercial organization engaged in the mining and selling of spice is borrowed from Frank Herbert's durable science fiction classic Dune.

Fred: Fire good.
This is a call back to a series of Saturday Night Live sketches that featured Phil Hartman as the Frankenstein monster, Jon Lovitz as Tonto and Kevin Nealon as Tarzan. In his role as the monster Hartman would usually be limited to the line "Fire bad!"

  • How come nobody likes cheeze whiz on this show?

    ;-)

  • lol

  • 4:57 "Fire good."

Phil, Jon and Kevin Nealon used to do a recurring sketch on SNL called Tarzan, Tonto and Frankenstein. Phil was Frankenstein and when he would get upset he would say: "Fire bad."

Jon was clearly referencing that sketch there.

  • Yep. This is listed in the episodes description.

  • Hello; is the pop-up bubbles version of this episode available? I thought it would be fun to see that; especially since I missed most of it when it aired many years ago. Thanks.

  • No, that version is not available. It originally aired on April 1st 1998 and once again on the A&E channel during re-runs. It may be on the new Newsradio Complete DVD Collection being released soon, but I believe this is just a bundled version of the already released seasons 1-5 which I already have and this episode or an option to watch this episode in "bubble-vision" is nowhere to be found.
