My grandfather, Peter A. Perniciaro from Bethpage, NY, was a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. A member of the 94th Bomb Group stationed at Rougham Airfield, he flew 35 missions, mostly over Germany in a B-17 that we think was nicknamed the "Dutchess." The bombardier in his crew was Tom Guilfoil of St. Louis and the waist gunner was "Jake" Jacobsen of Colorado Springs. I wish we knew the names of the rest of the men who flew with him and I'm hoping that this post will lead to finding new information. My grandfather will turn 90 on June 6, 2011. Five years ago, the Collings Foundation out of Stowe, MA brought a B-17 to Republic Airfield in Long Island, NY and my dad was able to get tickets to bring my grandfather up for one more ride in his old aircraft at the age of 85. My dad brought a video camera along and handed the footage over to my brother who is a Hollywood editor and produced this short video for our family during Christmas 2006. There are a lot of us - Grandpa's been married 60+ years, has five sons, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. I was motivated to post the video here for all of you to enjoy after my grandfather's sister (a computer-saavy retired U.S. Marine now in her 80's ) emailed us a link to a similar video that actor Gary Sinise was part of after bringing his uncle Jack up in a B-17, too! To see Gary's video, go to the Sleeping Dog Productions website and look for a reel called "Uncle Jack." In our video, once the plane was up in the air, Grandpa made his way to the cockpit and there are some nice shots of the Long Island coastline as the plane flew over Jones Beach. Grandpa did not speak a lot about his experiences as a young pilot in the war, but he did say that he and his fellow airmen did a lot of praying while they were flying those missions. We are proud of Grandpa and all the men and women who have served, and are serving, our country. God bless you all!
Amazing video. Brought a tear to my eye. That man was all smiles. I'm so glad he got to do that.

Thank you, KP849. This video brought tears to my eyes. My grandpa was a Belly Gunner in the 94th BG, 410th SQ. Watching your grandpa, I could see my own. He died in 2001. I'm sure we share the same pride in them.
