This is another one of those scripture songs that just sort of wrote itself. Back in about 1992 I was thinking it would be nice to put some of Jesus' parables to music and The Parable of the Ten Virgins was one of the first ones I tried to do. For some reason it just sort of came together without any real effort. The message of this parable is so appropriate to our time, don't you think?

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgin,
Which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the Bridegroom.
Five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
And while the Bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

And at midnight there was a cry made,
Behold, the Bridegroom cometh;
Go ye out to meet Him.
Then all those virgins arose and trimm their lamps.

And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil;
For our lamps are gone out.
But the wise answered, saying,
Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you:
But go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
And while they went to buy, The Bridegroom came;
And they that were ready went in with Him
To the marriage and the door was shut.

And afterward came also the other virgins, saying,
Lord, Lord, open unto us.
But He answered and said, Verily I say unto you,
I know you not.

Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Matthew twenty-five, verses one through thirteen. (x2)

  • She had several of your tapes. She was a slender, tall black lady you would have likely met in the late 80's/early 90's. At any rate, she passed away; I have the tapes of your music still. She was a very Godly woman, and God used her to tremendously impact my life. Google our web page at Closure for Jesus to hear more....appreciate your music! I have a Taylor 12 str. left-handed. Nice!

  • @ConsideringHim She sounds vaguely familiar. I may have met her @ a camp meeting we used to have every year around that time near Clifton, TN. It's possible I might also have met her @ the Hope International camp meeting in Washington in 1987, or the Little Grassy Camp meeting in 1989-90. We distributed a lot of tapes around that time, and met a lot of people, and wouldn't necessarily remember all their names, but it sounds like she was a really godly person. It's nice to hear stories like this.

  • Do you remember a lady named Dawn Jenkins?

  • @ConsideringHim No, I can't say I do, actually. I've met a few people named Dawn, and a number of people with the last name, Jenkins, but I don't particularly remember a lady named Dawn Jenkins. It's entirely possible that I have met her, but where should I remember her from?

  • It would be nice to have a whole CD of the parables to music!

  • Actually, that thought has occurred to me. That may be my next project.
