Anita O'Day (1919-2006) was an American jazz singer.
Anita O'Day was admired for her sense of rhythm and dynamics, and her early big band appearances shattered the traditional image of the "girl singer". Refusing to pander to any female stereotype, O'Day presented herself as a "hip" jazz musician, wearing a band jacket and skirt as opposed to an evening gown. She changed her surname from Colton to O'Day, pig Latin for "dough," slang for money.
She cited Martha Raye as the primary influence on her vocal style, although she also expressed admiration for Mildred Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.

As with your other postings on Anita, you've done a great service to this wonderful lady & helped get the word out to the world that she was once here & contributed all she had to give. This keeps her here and inspires others to catch and surpass her. I salute you. I hope in time those lucky enough to have filmed performances of Anita will share those treasures with those of us that can only wish we had been there. Cheers
