What is it like to train for an Ultra Marathon?

I find out when I join Leor Pantilat (winner of 2010 Way Too Cool) and Gary Gellin (winner of 2010 Way Too Cool masters division) for a training run.

In this film, I try to evoke the sunrise-to-sunset dedication that is required of the ultra runner.

I also wanted to depict a sense of weariness from an 18.5 mile training run in the hills, but little of my footage evoked any tiredness (these guys just wern't tired even after running that far). I was exhausted, which probably explains why I wanted to convey a sense of fatigue.

Fortunately, I captured a few brief displays of fatigue in between the lively conversation, and plan making for the first ever Boggs Mountain Ultra Endurance Run. You can find out more information about the Boggs 50 here:

  • was that western states trail?

  • @abolcik - No, this was Boggs Mountain. Boggs Mountain has the potential for lots of great running. Few of the trails are very steep, and if you like pine trees for scenery, you're in luck. Gary and Leor are researching putting on an ultra-running race at this location next year. Stay tuned.

  • Great video! Makes me want to go out and hit the trails. What kind of camera stabilization system are you using that you can take along on an 18 mi run?!?!

  • Sony HDR CX500 w/ 3 way stabilization (the technology helps). I used a wide angle lens during the the running footage as well. Other than that, just a lightweight tripod (cantilevered for balancing).

  • 13 min miles. No wonder they weren't tired ;)

  • thats pretty much the way it goes... unless you have a job... and live in illinois: because then you training will be alone. -and on roads. -and possibly at night after work.

nice video though, im not tryin to bash anyone. this video shows every ultra runners dream, not reality.

  • man, the best part about waking up when it's still dark and hit the trial under headlamp-light? the sweet knowledge that when it's done I'll have another day of being chewed to death and an adviser and 3 or so professors. Gotta love how real life always fucked everything up.
