The so-called presidentiables should join the big rally against the Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass) resolution on June 10 on Ayala Avenue in Makati, United Opposition (UNO) president and Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay said.

Anyone who is aspiring for the national election in 2010 from the presidency to the Senate regardless of political affiliations should join the rally," Binay said.

We will welcome everyone. The issue is no longer about political parties but the prospect that we will have election for parliament in 2010 and we might just have Mrs. Arroyo as our prime minister for life. Ano na ang mangyayari sa bansa natin kung matutuloy ito? Dapat nating tutulan at dapat ipakita natin na nagkakaisa tayo, he said.

The Makati rally is being organized by a broad coalition of political parties, peoples organizations and civil society groups. Other rallies will also be conducted in key cities in the provinces.

The June 10 rally will be held from 5pm to 8pm at the corner of Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas.

Marchers will come from different assembly points in Metro Manila.

Among those spearheading the rally are UNO, Association of Major Religious Superiors (AMRSP), Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), Concerned Citizens Movement, Black and White Movement, Gabriela, Former Senior Government Officials (FSGO), Bangon Pilipinas, Union of Masses for Democracy and Justice (UMDJ), FPJPM, and other political groups and civil society organizations.

Binay said the June 10 rally is a prelude to other mass actions to condemn Con-Ass, which he described as a move to extend Mrs. Arroyos stay in power beyond 2010.

Ang punot dulo ng Con-Ass ay ang kagustuhan ni Mrs. Arroyo na manatili sa kapangyarihan. This is not for the good of the country, this is only for the selfish interest of Mrs. Arroyo, he said.




Binay said House allies of Mrs. Arroyo appear confident that they will get the Supreme Court to rule in their favor. Once Con-Ass pushes through, Mrs. Arroyos allies in Congress will push for a shift to the parliamentary form of government in 2010.




This will allow Mrs. Arroyo who will run for a congressional seat in Pampanga to become a member of parliament once the shift is ratified in a referendum before the election, he said.




Once she is an MP, she will use her clout and money to be elected prime minister, he added.




This grim scenario can be stopped by nipping Con-Ass in the bud. We need to show Mrs. Arroyo that the people will not sit by and allow her to do as she pleases. We need to get the people out on the streets not only in June 10 but until they back down on Con Ass, he said.
