Rose Mapendo escaped from a Congolese death camp with her children in 1998 after soldiers forced her to listen to the torture and execution of her husband. With the help of human rights activist Sasha Chanoff, she fled to the United States and became the spokesperson for Mapendo International, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that works to rescue and protect other African refugees who have been affected by war and conflict. This short film by fbi productions, profiling her story, premiered at the Fifth Anniversary Volvo for life Awards ceremony in New York in April 2007. • It makes me ashamed to see that there have been only two comments in one and a half years on this video about an amazingly courageous woman, yet thousands clamour to make mindless and shallow comments about other videos featuring absolute trivia.

  • For Rose: Love you and your work. Ku mana niho niringihe. If mistake: I'm sorry.

  • In the first place, I comment on matagouri: YouTube is known for people to make mindless and shallow comments. I'm glad people have refrained to do so with this video.

Second: I ordered, saw the DVD, because I worked as a volunteer with a Banyamulenge woman. Watching the DVD I found out Rose is from the same village... Minembwe! I plan to show the DVD to my collegues from RefugeeWork in the Netherlands. To pity the DVD doesn't have multilanguage subtitles, especcialy French.

  • Life is wonderful and strong in your eyes. Thank you! I put the name Mapendo in a small farm I bought to have some of your energy. Amazing.

  • An AMAZING woman...strong and unbreakable...she serves as inspiration to so many. I have had the honor of speaking with her brother, Dr. Kigabo Mbazumutima. Together, Rose and her brother founded Mapendo New Horizons, "To give help and hope to vulnerable survivors of physical, psychological, and social trauma in Africa by ensuring them easy access to health care, protection and security."

  • Matagouri you are so absolutely right. Rose's story is about incredible bravery and perseverance which most of the world should know about. There are so few people like her, we could all learn something for her experiences.

  • Happy Mother's Day. My inspiration.

  • I am so overwhelmed by her beauty and strength. You can see it every time she smiles. What a sensational woman!

  • She is absolutely amazing!

  • This is leadership. African leaders should watch this and change their myopic approach towards life.

  • Absolutely amazing. It's such an inspiration to know that people like Rose Mapendo, Somaly Mam & Wangari Maathai exist... People need to know about them, the world needs to know that people like them have such great love for life and that they can carry on after situations such as theirs.... Thank you so much to the person that posted this, thank you Rose Mapendo, thank you for showing us what love is REALLY about. ♥
