See the intense heat created when 4500v @ half an amp meets a quarter.

A 5kw inverter feeds a microwave oven transformer of the larger commercial variety. A bowl of water with some lye in it forms a conductive pond. One electrode goes to the water, and the other has the coin attached to it. The water acts as a resistor so as to not overload the MOT...and once an arc is struck, the coin rapidly heats and then melts.

BTW, melting US coins is only illegal if you have fraudulent intent.
