Walbaums in San Remo, New York is one of two grocery stores in Kings Park and has been vital part of the local community since 1973. CVS a national drug store chain has proposed to setup operation in the space now occupied by Walbaums.
Many in the community oppose this plan because of the vital role this small community grocery store fills in the village of San Remo, specifically the lack of other grocery stores in the area and the negative impact an national chain drug store will have on small business in the area.
This change of business does not require a variance or public hearing and is considered an allowed use. CVS has requested that the required parking spaces are reduced and that they be permitted to have additional signs in excess of local ordinances, both of which does require a public hearing before the Town of Smithtown, Zoning Board of Appeals.
On Feb 24, 2008 this public hearing was held, this video details the case provided by Steve Weber on behalf of the local community in opposition to this variance. All discussions were limited to the sign and parking issues and any discussion on the merits of a national chain drug vs- community grocery store was prohibited.
