ALSO KNOWN AS THE "ODE TO JOY" - THIS IS THE COMPLETE 4th MOVEMENT - WITH THE SINGERS GERMAN WORDS ON SCREEN IN ENGLISH.
THIS IS THE COMPOSER'S 9th AND FINAL ATTEMPT TO WHIP THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INTO A FRENZY, AND HE MORE THAN SUCCEEDED, AS YOU CAN SEE AND HEAR BY THE END OF IT - LISTEN ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF IT NOW - DON'T GIVE UP ON IT TOO SOON CAUSE YOU ARE NOT USE TO THESE KINDS OF SOUNDS - BY THE THIRD TIME HEARING THIS, YOU SHOULD BE STARTING TO BE OBSESSED WITH IT - AND GIVE THIS GUY A BREAK AND LISTEN TO HIS STUFF, CAUSE HE DID ALL THIS COMPOSING IN HIS HEAD, SINCE HE WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DEAF BY THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER.
THIS IS OF COURSE PROBABLY THE MOST FAMOUS CLASSICAL PIECE EVER WRITTEN - AND IN MY OPINION THIS IS THE MOST STAGGERING ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE HISTORY OF MAN, AND THIS IS THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF THIS PIECE I'VE EVER SEEN AND HEARD - EXCEPT FOR THE BIG TROMBONE SOLO WHERE THEY WERE WAY OFF PITCH - OTHER THAN THAT, IT WAS ALMOST PERFECT.
I COULDN'T FIND THE DVD TO BUY, WHEN I LOOKED FOR IT EXTENSIVELY - AND THIS VERSION IS TOO GOOD TO BE A TOTAL LOSS TO THE WORLD - THOUGH I DON'T THINK THEY CAN SELL THIS RECORDING BECAUSE OF THE GLARING MISTAKE.... AND EVEN THOUGH THE TROMBONES RUINED THE RECORDING, THE CONDUCTOR (LEONARD SLATKIN) MANAGED TO PULL A LOT OF FIERCE MOMENTUM OUT OF THOSE OLD WOODEN BOXES, BY ITS VERY COLOSSAL ENDING.
LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS IN ENGLAND, AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, 2001 - (JUST AFTER 9/11).
LAST MOVEMENT OF THE PIECE ONLY.
THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE GERMAN WILL COME ON THE SCREEN WHEN THE SINGERS FINALLY START TO SING.
THIS AIRED FOR FREE ON PUBLIC TV.
You can sense how the sounds from this orchestra excites inanimate matter to the brink of producing life in all its wonders. From darkness is born a rich rainbow of light to experience the joy of creation. God must have written this to inspire himself before his greatest creation.

Incredible. Beethoven never heard his work performed. He was deaf at this point. He had to use his mouth to clamp down the peice of wood in front of the keyboard to get the vibrations when he wrote this. How is that possible? All written by hand. If you have ever seen the score it is mind boggling. 13 sections of an orchestra all written in the right key for each instrument plus 5 voices for the chorus. God's gift to us.

A little "Auto-Tune" would fix that trombone..............
Seriously, this was a brilliant performance.............. The balance amongst the four singers was exemplary.
