@SenseOrSensibility plus even if he did tell the truth or not he would've died.if he said he wasn't a witch they would've kept adding stones until he died and if he said he was just to end it, he would've been hanged so either way it doesn't matter at least he stood for what he was, a christian not a witch

Only Yankee I ever admired. RIP, Giles. You were one tough ole man.

I just finshed reading this book. giles was for real.(i mean what he did for his family)
-
@SenseOrSensibility It's because if he lied and said he was a witch so they would save him, then he would be excommunicated and his land would go to Putnam instead of his sons like he wanted, so he refused to deny nor confess so that he would die a Christian and the land would stay in his family and his sons would get to keep it after his death.

@tmanbez poop

Why was it that he refused to plead either guilty or innocent?
(Also--this gives a whole new meaning to "pressing" someone for the truth!)
-
@planetrockford somehow I think those taken to the tower or "put to the question" would beg to differ. There's nothing Gentile about having a cast iron boot encase your foot just before being dangled over white hot coals or having your intestines removed while alive after thet have already (while alive) removed your "parts" all in an effort to get a confession.
