  • Watching Patti belt her face off is great but I think Lillias has the voice AND the acting to better capture this amazing woman.

  • Patti gives this role SOUL which it needed. Im sorry, Lilias was vanilla compared.

  • she has an amazing voice! her performance of this song left me speechless!

  • wordless

  • I saw Lillias sing this song in person and it brought tears to my eyes. The reaction was most unexpected, and even now when I hear it the song overwhelms me.

  • I think Patti brings her fan base and thing to the role. Ms. White is a great singer, but she isn't known outside of the theatre world. Whereas, Ms. Patty is is a musical Pop icon. Many people came just because her name was attached to it.

  • I saw this show tonight, and loved it. But I wish I would have seen Lillias White as the mother. In this video, she is amazing. Patti Labelle's acting was non-existent, and her projection and diction were awful. She sang her songs as if she was vocalizing for American Idol, rather than as a mother conveying deep and true love and concern for her son. She seemed lost wondering around the stage, with no clear objective nor energy. Sad. Still, the show was very powerful, and is worth seeing.

  • As of last night I've seen both women (Lillias and Patti) perform this role and I have to say Lillias White's performance trumped Patti's. Her vocal delivery and acting were just better for the role itself. Remember, this is just a snippet. Love me some Patti, though...

  • patti labelle ruined this role. Ms. White, Fela misses you.

  • PATTI LABELLE IS WAY BETTER YOU DONT EVEN FEEL NOTHING WHEN THIS LADY SINGING SHE SHOULD BE PATTI UNDERSTUDY
