Chicago Jews and community groups held an action on Oct. 11, 2011, outside a meeting of the Mortgage Bankers Association in Chicago, demanding a Sukkat Shalom ("shelter of peace") for Chicago families. The action was sponsored by the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs and A Just Harvest.
Outside the conference, the group constructed a sukkah, inside which Sukkot-related rituals, an interfaith clergy press conference, and community testimonies took place.
The Jewish holiday of Sukkot represents the halfway point between slavery and liberation. In the video, thes sukkah serves as a call to the attendees at the MBA's annual convention, to stop destroying Chicago communities through foreclosure and a refusal to modify loans. The sukkah will be decorated in the traditional style with colorful paper chains and an open-weave roof, with its walls comprised of canvas banners, bearing phrases including "Sukkat Shalom," "STOP Foreclosures" and "Housing is a Human Right."
