I love this song and this version is just stunning - its the King of Cool, the legendary Bobby Darin singing Artificial Flowers live.

Sinatra never sang like this. I hope you love this performance.

Darin (out)swings another of those songs that we really should be taking pity on (like Mack The Knife) where a treatment like this should really be frowned upon due to the song content but he more than gets away with it through sheer showmanship and 5 star quality.

I miss Bobby Darin. I don't think there will ever be another like him.

Added 2/9/11 - I am so glad so many people are enjoying this video and the comments sent to me. This guy is, was and will always be, a legend. His performance here eclipses anything his contemporaries ever achieved.

Thanks for keeping the memory of Bobby Darin alive!

  • Fantastic Bobby Darin!!! I love him!!!

  • With regard to the song's joyous treatment of tragic subject matter, I think you have to look at it as a hipster's take on (or take-off on) the viewpoint of the old saints' lives and martyrologies, which celebrated every moment of earthly misery or blow of earthly agony as something that would be transmuted into eternities of heavenly rapture. (How a hipster got himself in a frame of mind to sell that view with such enthusiasm is another question!)

  • There are a handful of songs in which Darin achieves an amazing alloy of Sinatra's swing and Elvis's rock sensibilities, and on those really does leave Sinatra in the dust. I do think Sinatra left behind many more great tracks in the "mere" swing idiom than Darin did, but, of course, Darin died WAY too young.

  • "Give her the real thing" I was waitin' for it but he never said it :(

  • @NYVoice I agree with how amazing Bobby is however Ray Eberly sang A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square :P Which is an amazing song :D

  • ewww

  • With all due respect to fans of Sinatra. I thought it was also because Darin's voice confused with it for long. To find out who was who sang these songs stay in love with him. It's so sexy and manly. What so delicious and sensual voice!!

  • I never liked the lyrics to this song but the melody and Bobby swings it and the band is awesome.

  • Interesting comments here. Bobby could interpret and deliver any song any time and yes, usually better and more up tempo than Frank. A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square is a prime example. I was at a cigar party in NYC back in 2005 and talking to an older Italian gent. We got to talking about music and I brought up Bobby's name. The man said had Bobby lived longer he would topped them all-Frank, Tony, all of of them. He was THAT good.

  • @gage992112 Just did. The tap sounds in the bridge were a warped, but nice touch!
