The 'flat' sound you refer to is probably on account of the fact that this is melodic black metal not melodic death metal. Black metal is often played in minor keys, giving it a flatter or darker sound.
As for 'noting that's never been played before', well, to each their own, but I find this very original material in a genre that I stopped listening to for awhile because it had gone stale. Now I'm back into it with bands like Old Man's Child and Illnath.
