In Windsor, we have a difficult time getting property owners to clear their sidewalks, ensuring safe passage for pedestians. There has been much debate over whose responsibilty it is to maintain this municipal infrastructure (see Toronto Star - http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/577174). It eventualy boils down to whether people can walk around the city, regardless of who is at fault for the lack of maintenance.

So, it is time to highlight those whose inactivity is causing pedestrians to travel unsafely in the midst of traffic, and attempt to shame them into doing the right thing.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ensures the Freedom of Mobility, and we must make every attempt at ensuring that right is accessible to all, regardless of their transportation choices.

Windsor By-Law enforcement officers, please note the addresses of the offending properties and uphold by-law 8544. The safety of the citizens of Windsor is at stake.

  • Thank you, 'scaledown', and may I return your compliment. You are keeping an active, honest eye on bylaw infractions that do need attention. As far as the Riverside Drive sidewalk snow removal goes, I have often wondered why home-owners along the 'Drive' never got together and paid a small annual fee to have someone in the private sector run a snowblower up and down both sides of that road whenever it snows. I guess it would take the city to suggest such before tickets are issued. Just an idea.
