The answer to this is very simple. No one knows. It is possible we may never know. The law you mentioned, the conservation of mass-energy, applies to our current "system". That would be "existence". What was before this system? What was before existence? A different existence? Multiple possibilities of existence? Nothing?
Some say it's like asking, what were you like before you were born or conceived.

Documentaries like this make me feel so small and inconsequential. I was watching the Oscar nominated documentary "Hell and Back Again" on Netflix instant watch, and all those Marines are out there, in Afghanistan and other places, making an impact and it made me feel just as small.
