A 'real' church doesn't keep their members in line with the Lord; and they're not going to do that.
So what makes a house church different? I keep getting the idea that people think house churches are unconventional and incorrect, or, more often, the same basic thing as regular churches, and of course they can pretty much be. I've read several books on the subject, most notably, Rethinking The Wineskin, by Frank Viola.
The church is family, God's people, and this commitment, which the big institutions lack, present in home churches, their focus on their brothers and sisters, keeps the members accountable to each other in a great way.
