This is for Grumpy Coyote's "Bring the Song" challenge.
I went to a Humphrey Lyttelton concert a little while ago, and they struck up at one stage with a song called "Love makes the world go round", and, good though it was, my first thought was that it sounded unlikely in terms of astrophysics. Here, then, with apologies to H L Mencken, from whom the first line of the chorus was nicked, is my response. Not meant too sincerely, and I hasten to add that I don't actually know anyone called Dorothy.
(Chorus): Love is the delusion that one woman differs from another
And it's angular momentum that makes the world go round. (D D7 G E D A D)
The solar system was just a cloud of dust, rocks and gas, but what span it (D G D)
Was the angular momentum it gained from a supernova, which also caused parts to condense and form into planets. (G D)
Now energy can neither be created or destroyed, (A G)
So as the earth condensed it went on spinning faster through the void, (A G)
And it's conservation of angular momentum that makes the world go round. (A G D)
Chorus.
I saw her walking down the road the other day, and my heart skipped a beat.
It was the onset of atrial fibrillation, related to the hypertension caused by all the crap I eat.
The electrical impulses generated by the sino-atrial node
Are disrupted by other impulses causing arrhythmia, and we know
That it's angular momentum that makes the world go round.
Chorus.
Hobbes tells us that the life of man is nasty, brutish and short.
So's a girl I know called Dorothy... apparently I wasn't quite her sort. Still, like Lord Chesterfield said,
"The pleasure is momentary, the position is ridiculous,
And the expense damnable", and if we're going to be meticulous
It's angular momentum that makes the world go round.
A couple of choruses to finish.
(Still, that's Noether's theorem for you).
It was better live, says Robert...

As yeer by yere was alwey hir usaunce
To singe a roundel at hir departinge,
To do to Nature honour and plesaunce."
