November 1, 2011--The setting was the Golden Nugget Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. The event was the International Powerlifting League's World Championships. I weighed in at 213.2 lbs., the lightest I've been in several years.
I opened with a conservative 275 lbs. because I defied conventional wisdom, and used a new Katana, which I purchased 24 hours earlier. Chris Pappillion directed my efforts to find the right shirt, and then went the extra mile by being my handler for the BP portion of the meet.
I jumped to 325 lbs. for my second attempt, and the bar EXPLODED off of my chest with thanks, again, to Chris Pappilion. His inherent enthusiasm influenced my decision on this attempt with 402 lbs. He made another perfect adjustment on the shirt, and I got a good solid touch. I got the bar velocity off of the chest, but just couldn't quite get the triceps to assist with the lockout.
