Those who didn't get it - my apologies - I should have put an explanation along with this video. Awesome Lemon Blossom got it right. Thanks, ALB. This is what I call a hand block. If you practice showing your pup that she MUST control herself in order to continue play, she will learn to keep teeth off hands. If teeth hit hands, you pull away or walk away. If pup waits, like this Westie, you reward with great play! Practice makes perfect. For difficult pups, always use long toys in play.

I don't think this was a waste. It just showed that when you're playing with your puppy with a toy, hide it in your hand for a minute and if your puppy doesn't bite your hand then let the toy go and praise your dog :) Also, adorable puppy!!

@pcd6music In general, always know your pup and keep yourself out of harms way. For big pups who are more challenging, try doing the block behind your folded forearms and sit up tall, leaning slightly forward when you block. GSDs are very intelligent and spatially aware, and many will read your body language, taking pause. If the pup is still out of control, do it from standing at first, with a long toy like a tennis ball in the bottom of long tube sock or two tied together.

This trick only works with small dog. My 3 months old GR didn't respond to it. In fact he jumped at me bit my hand to get his toy. My boy is very difficult to teach surprising for a GR. The only thing I manage to teach him is to sit and wait for his food. He won't even listen to 'come'. I felt like such a failure. :(. Anyone out there want to give some advice?

@SexySheerah With big out of control dogs it can be harder to stand your ground, but of course it works, sometimes you just need an in person trainer to help you. Your pup is only 3 months so you have plenty of time to turn things around and there is no doubt he is capable of learning once you know what to do and not to do! I would look for a private trainer near you. For more free videos, go to my blog, Real Deal on Dogs - the Basic Obedience section, or CATCH Dog Trainers.
