@hawkwood44 Yes - please put some more of john on utube. I only met him once, about 20 years ago. He was living with a friend of mine in woodstock. Wish he could have made some more $ and not been so dragged down by poverty.
I knew both these boys from my days at Cafe Lena in Saratoga. Actually played with Frank a couple of times up at the Cafe, enjoyed his playing immensely. What a pair these two were when the Greenbriar Boys were the unit. Good times for all.
It's too bad there is so little of John on u tube....he was an inspiration to all of us ...I saw him hanging out at the Folklore center in the village one day and picked up a version of Bully of the Town that he never recorded.....think I'll put it on u tube as a tribute with my band the Grey Sky Boys....John Hawkwood
John was my inspiration for learning the country/bluegrass guitar style back in '62 at the age of 14...still play his style today... ole Doc Watson helped me out too!!! In Maine back then there was not much to choose from for bluegrass, but I found two really good mentors...
John Herald was a uniquely talented singer, not to mention guitarist. One night at a storefront club in Philly's Germantown, around 1971 or so, some friends and I took in John Herald's show. There was a little jam afterwards, and he let me play his prewar Martin while he talked with friends. I remember that I could feel the sound in the neck like on no other guitar I'd ever played. Thanks, Johnny!

That 1st greenbriar boys album lit up my life. Johnnys singing of "at the end of each long and lonely day" is haunting. He deserved a better fate.

I've never heard this version before... Dock boggs' version has the same words but a totally different melody. I like both versions though
