The Sussex Downsman was one of the final steam hauled railtours to traverse the lines of the former London Brighton & South Coast Railway. We begin at Three Bridges where, having traversed the Cranleigh line, Maunsell N class 2-6-0 No.31411 gives way to Bulleid Q1 0-6-0 No.33027. At Tunbridge Wells west we see unrebuilt Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' 4-6-2 No.34066 'Spitfire' with the next stage of the tour to the south coast.

There is a possibility that Cranleigh may yet see another train; a study was carried out in the 1990s to determine whether re-opening part of the Cranleigh Line to passenger traffic from Bramley to Guildford would be economically viable. Although the conclusion was that the investment required would not justify reinstatement, Waverley Borough Council have protected the line from development in its Local Plan.

The Association of Train Operating Companies have applied for funding for a new line to Cranleigh.
