**note** I am claiming fair use of this work. This video is posted exclusively for educational and analytical reasons.

***********************************

Long before it became common knowledge that the Catholic Church supports and covers up child abuse and child rape, Sinead O'Connor shocked the world by calling out the Pope as the leader of an evil organization on The sketch comedy/music TV show Saturday Night Live.

The audience, in disbelief, was silent as her last note fell and she ripped up a photo of the pontiff.

She was lambasted in the press, and even pop-fame-machine Madonna found a reason to insult and dismiss her in an effort to pander to a nation that was not yet ready to know the truth about the RCC.

Years later, we would all find out just why Sinead was so angry.

  • The picture of the Pope was a symbol. Religion is the divider between people. The sentiment of the song is very powerful. It was a statement and she hurt no one. If she had put up a picture of a Big Mac people would have gotten mad. It's that kind of passion that freaks people out.

Thank you. I think this is probably the most thoughtful comment anyone has left on this video so far. You are absolutely right. Being passionate scares the piss out of people, because we've been trained not to stand up for what we believe in in any real capacity.

  • actually, it IS uncalled for because she lied to them about what she was going to do during the song. if you want to make a statement, that's great, but don't use an unwitting third party as your platform. if you don't see what's wrong with that, then I dunno what to tell you.

corporations are evil. if they can be used by good people for good, then they should be. who gives a flying fuck about the network here?

  • not classy. everyone is entitled to their opinion... but this was inappropriate.

  • @Bryan7Q

calling out child rape is never inappropriate.

  • If I could I would get a bunch of Gasoline and call Sinead and we could burn down the fucking Vatican and have the pope raped in the ass by a long line of gay men!!!!

  • She was 10 years ahead of her time! I'm glad she's unapologetic about what she did on 10/3/1992. It was a bold symbolic move a decade before sex abuse in the archdoise was exposed.

  • @ztmario1 that third party got more press coverage and notoriety than they had ever had before because of the controversy caused. I bet their viewer numbers skyrocketed. how horrific that must have been for them.

  • Things like these always happen. People are blinded with what they are taught. We are afraid of the differences. We label the differences as outsiders, evil and bad. But when times goes on, we often came to realize the evil we talked about is in fact telling us the truth, wanting to remind us of the dangers.

    God bless Sinead O'Connor.

  • "I don't get it!"

  • @Bryan7Q Bryan, please watch "deliver us from evil."
