My Other Half - Chapter 26

Demi's POV

"My fingers look like raisins," I said as he examined my hands. I let out a deep sigh when I saw my feet. "So do my toes."
Joe looked at his own hands and smirked. "Get used to it."
"I'm still not getting how to swim just yet." I say, slipping on my sunglasses.
"That's because you refuse to go deeper into the water."
"I told you, I don't wanna." I looked over at him. "It's scary." He was about to say something but I beat him and said, "Anyway, what about lunch?"
Joe scratched his head and looked back out over the water then across the beach. I followed his gaze and saw him watching a bunch of other teenagers playing beach volleyball with the public net. It was always there for anyone who wanted to use it.
"That's out." He mumbled softly to himself when the ball got thrown way out of the boundaries. It was the look on his face that got me wondering.
"Why are you looking at them like that?" I asked.
He squinted towards the sun then looked back at me. "I've always wondered what it'd be like to, you know, live a normal life. And have friends that will treat you like you're a normal person." He said.
"What do you mean? I'm your friend." I say. "I don't go crazy when I'm with you just because you're a Jonas Brother."
"Yeah, that's because you don't like me."
"I don't like you?" I asked.
"Yeah, at least in the beginning you didn't." He looked at the volleyball game again. "Well, you didn't seem to like me."
"That was before I knew you." I say, he doesn't reply. "We're normal people, too."
"Oh, yeah? Then do normal people get chased around by paparazzi? Have their faces on the cover of magazines every week?"
I looked around, searching every possible spot that paparazzi would hide.
"There's no one watching us." I said. He shook his head.
"Check again." He says as he looks over at someone sitting on a nearby bench. When the reporter saw me look at him, he acted as if he was reading the paper, even though I could see their camera bag sitting right next to them.
"Oh." My smile turned upside down.
"Why can't they let us have fun without the whole world knowing?"
"You're right." I turned my attention back to the game. "You wanna play?"
"I don't even know them."
"I'm sure they'd let you join." I say.
"What, just because I'm Joe Jonas?" He smirked.
"What's so special about being Joe Jonas?" I joked. He looked at me and hit my arm playfully.
"Hey now."
I laughed and got up and put my shirt and shorts on over my bathing suit. My bikini was already dried from sitting under the sun. "Lets go grab lunch." I say, offering my hand to help Joe up. He took it and I pulled him up. He slipped a dry t-shirt on. We folded up my beach blanket and our stuffed our towels into our bags. I put my bag over my shoulder and Joe slung his on his back.
"Got everything?" Joe asked me, looking around our spot for anything that he might've left behind.
"Yep. Lets go."
I saw Joe's eyes travel towards the people playing volleyball. My eyes traveled to the bench where the paparazzi was sitting on, but he was no longer there. I cleared my throat and shifted my bag to my other arm.
"Oh, right." Joe snapped back into reality. "Sorry. Lets go." He started towards the parking lot but I grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
"Hey, next time we come, we should bring a bunch of friends and have a game of our own. Sound good?" I asked and smiled.
"Yeah." He smiled at me. "I think we should."
We walked back to his car and put our stuff in the back. I waited for him by the passenger door until he unlocked the car for me. When he did, as usual, he helped me up into the seat. We left the beach and turned the radio up high, singing along to a bunch of our favorite songs. I did, anyway. We stopped by a burger place for a quick lunch. Then, Joe took me home. I went up to my room and lay down on my bed. I smiled at the ceiling and pulled out my phone. I hadn't checked my phone ever since we left the house. The dream came back to me when I saw a text from Trace.
