Password
BIOS and Router type hardware can be reset manually
Brute Force -- A piece of software that tries Username/ Password combinations at random until it finds the right ones.
Find Password -- Some passwords are stored in a way that software can discover what they are
Reset Password -- For Windows Operating Systems you can reset user passwords. Encrypted files will be unreadable
File Corruption
Easily fixed with $50 software
Deletion
Files are not actually deleted
Recuva.com is a very good free tool
Secure deletion makes files unrecoverable
Stop using the computer if you accidentally delete a file.
Physical Damage
You need a clean room in order to fix a hard drive
Expect to pay $1000-$3000 if hard drive physically dies
Manufactures use different parts o the same model of hard drive
Final Thoughts
A good backup routine is the best bet

  • Hey Eli, nice tuts, good on you! I got a request for a recovery tutorial..

    Can you do one on HD's that have there boot sectors removed, and or are formatted.

    I was told its possible to recover data from formatted drives.

    Please elaborate on that if so.

  • @MicronicleDust use a piece of data recovery software like Recuva and you should be ok.

  • @dannygizzle33 Probably... That way you can easily bill them for the software. Honestly you don't run across A LOT of corrupted files, so buying it for your own tool kit is probably not a worthwhile expense.

  • @elithecomputerguy oh ok last question as a consultant would you download for each client on there system

  • @dannygizzle33 No you'll have to find a tool that fixes the specific type of file that is corrupted. ScanPST fixes Outlook PST files, there are programs to fix corrupted Word Docs, and Power Point Docs, etc... They generally want $30 per type of file you are trying to recover.

  • @elithecomputerguy Does recuva also repair corrupted files along with recovering erased files?
