Gary W. Gallagher, the John L. Nau Professor in History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia, gave this year's Remembering Robert E. Lee lecture on Oct. 12, 2009, in Lee Chapel

The title of the talk is "Robert E. Lee Confronts Defeat: Duty in the Wake of Appomattox."

An award-winning Civil War author and scholar, Gallagher has written "Causes Won, Lost and Forgotten: How Hollywood and Popular Art Shape What We Know About the Civil War," "Lee and His Army in Confederate History," "Lee and His Generals in War and Memory" and "The Confederate Memory."

Gallagher served as president of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites. He also served as editor of the "Civil War America" series and the "Military Campaigns of the Civil War" series.
