"Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry - part 1 (Christmas story reading)

Everybody knows a version of this story, which has been recycled by everybody who can recognise a good idea when they see one, but relatively few people know the original well. So here it is.

I was eleven when our teacher read this story to our class at Christmastime in 1956. I've loved it ever since. I remember the dust mites floating in the winter sunbeams filtering through the windows as she read. I think you are the first person I have heard read it aloud since that time. Lovely. Thank you.
