More experiments: http://grimaceworks.com/mf/lab

I got tired of using Windows to make music. So I had to get a Mac. But my favourite VST Plugin 'dblue glitch' does not work on the Mac. So I decided if I was going to get a Mac I'd learn how to program an effects unit to do the job that the ol' dblue used to do. A week of struggling later and here is how far I've got. I've gone deep into the dark world of C++, deep into weird things to do with how XCode works, encountered strange examples of how to do things, become enraged at the poor coding standards that the API seemed to be promoting, and eventually came up with a framework that allowed me to create a plugin that did things the way I want.

The idea is you trigger the different effects using a MIDI controller. The parameter set is deliberately limited (though I have put in the ones that are most fun). This is to make it easy to wire up to a controller in Ableton Live.

Note that this is very much a work in progress. The Cocoa UI won't work in Ableton (Logic, Garageband etc... only) but I will be making something nice and slick that does. There are still plenty of issues with this but I was just so excited I had to show you.

  • Hello, Michael! You may be able to help me!

Ok, I have Ableton on my PC, and Garageband on my Mac. Would it be possible to create beats on my P.C, save to memory card, and export them to my Mac. As in, can I save the beats to something that Garageband recognises, such as an MP3, or .WAV? It's annoying having to seperate programmes on two seperate systems!

    Thanks in advance...

  • You do understand that saying 'thanks in advance' is usually a sure fire way not to get any help...

but in answer to your questions: yes. Sure. Why not. Export as WAV or AIF and you're fine. I recently started exporting 'all tracks' from Ableton to move stuff between apps. This works pretty well, especially if you use External Instruments for any Reason channels.

  • Hmm, there's plenty of requests on that guy's website to make a Mac version, but he doesn't respond...

  • he's responded very clearly! 11 comments in. And he used to have a big bit on his 'contact' page about how there wasn't going to be a mac version any time soon. frustrating, but hey.

  • Cool, nice version! lookin forward to seeing a sleek finished product. I love dblue glitch aswell, the options are endless. Will you be releasing the plug in free? and will you be transcending the mac/pc barrier so i can play it on Win?

  • hi - yeah - I'll put it out for free, but no windows version I'm afraid - I'm using the Mac plugin framework. It is open source though so if anybody wanted they could convert it. But you've already got the Dblue one on Windows, so you don't need mine :)

  • THIS IS GREAT PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN THIS IS FINISHED!! I'll beta test! as long as it doesnt crash my mac book pro lol. I run logic.

  • Nice work! I'm sorry to everyone who wants a Mac version, but as Michael pointed out, I've tried several times to explain why I haven't done it yet. I DO try to respond to all questions, but when people constantly ask the same thing without even reading what I've previously said, it gets a little bit frustrating. On the Glitch discussion page on my site, I've posted a explanation and given several suggestions for alternate Mac plugins, so I doubt I'll reply to any more comments on the matter.

  • someone convert that shit... Nice work dawg.

  • Sounds like Electro-Death O_O..... Sick

  • dude don't forget to add a repeater effect onto it. Also will it be available for PC too?

  • Ha! Thankyou for you quidk answer, Michael. You Sir, are a legend.
