The Mercury Meteor, as a brand, was a hit in Canada. Canadians tend to prefer smaller, more economical cars than Americans do—needs that the Meteor fulfilled.

Its common in marketing to use names and symbols drawn from a countrys history and culture. Mercury increased the Meteors appeal in Canada by giving distinctively Canadian names to each model, like Niagara, Rideau, and in this case Montcalm.

Introduced in 1949, the Meteor sold exclusively in Canada for eleven years.

  • @Drivermatic Actually there were three other makes Ford produced in North America for 1960: The Frontenac (sold by Lincoln-Meteor-Mercury dealers in Canada as their version of the Falcon) and the Mercury (nee Edsel) Comet, sold by American Lincoln-Mercury dealers. And if you count the badge-engineered Mercury trucks sold only in Canada, Ford offered nine different car and truck lines for 1960.

  • Wow! This is the first 1961 Canadian Meteor I have ever seen--and. compared to the 1961 Meteor 600 and 800 models sold in the states, It's sad that everyone got so confused about which Meteor was which! Considering that Ford just discontinued Mercury because of its similarity with current Ford models, I wonder how Canadians ever kept producing Fords, Monarchs, Mercurys, Meteors, and Ford and Mercury trucks as long as they did!

  • Every man's dream? I saw a similar vehicle mentioned online at fasteconomicalcars (.) com

  • @tomp64 You are correct. Is the Meteor wagon still available?

  • @Drivermatic

Actually there were more than that, Continental was considered a different make than Lincoln and Frontenac and Comet were considered there own brands too.

I have a 61 Meteor wagon. Not quite as nice as the one in the video but i'll let somebody else restore it.

  • Canadians tend to prefer smaller, more economical cars because they are POOR.

  • The Meteor in Canada was not a Mercury but a discreet make. Additionally Ford produced the Monarch make in Canada. For the model year of 1960, Ford Motors produced six makes: Ford, Mercury, Edsel, Meteor, Monarch and Lincoln for North American markets
