In our writing centers, we must strive to create a space that is positive and nurturing for ESL students, but at the same time encourages real, genuine improvement. This can be achieved by examining the way we interact with the students. The first two points we offer have to do with how the tutor's verbal messages come across to ESL students. The third point covers how the tutor's non-verbal interaction with the student shapes a session. These points are all essential to how comprehensively a student will learn and the attitude they may have during a session.
