  • The first microscope was invented by Zacharias Jansen, in Middleburg, Holland, in about 1595. Zacharias and his father, Hans, were lens grinders, for eyeglasses. Experimenting, they discovered that if you put several convex lenses together in a tube, things got a lot bigger-- about 9 times bigger for the first one. This was called a "compound microscope." It used ordinary lens that were made for eyeglasses. This was how almost all microscopes were made until the middle of the 19th century.
