When I was in the Corps in the 90's, the fire team was broken down like this.
Fire team Leader carried a 203.
One member carried a M16
Third member carried a SAW
Fourth member was "A-gunner" he had a M16, extra SAW barrel and SAW ammo.
A 0331 usually shot the m240G, 50 cal, or MK 19.
In a nut shell the 0311's carried a SAW if that was their task.

you have to be a 0331 to own a saw but if your a 0311 you can use the one thats mounted onyour humvee

Ah. I take it you were a grunt. Semper Fi. I was 0311 with 3/5. I was during the last half of the 90s, before they switched to the new uniforms. It is hard for me to accept the new uniforms. It makes me feel old, since they no longer use the woodlands. It is also hard to grasp that they now have boots they don't even have to polish. One of the main "free time" activities during boot camp was polishing boots.
