Is a very clever routine called "SIDVicious", basically, from what I can gather, converts the original C64 SID into Digital Data and fires it through a register in the VIC sound chip to produce a convincing SID emulation. I assume, but don't quote me is a clever form of compression not to dissimilar to MP3?.....Google it anyhow is some info from the guy who wrote the routine somewhere on the net. All clever stuff anyhow....
