I think Cantona was meant to be the trawler, and the seagulls (media) flocked around him for him to feed them sardines (the cheap stories to sell).

Excellent interpretation Paladin ;)

when the seagulls (media) follow the trawler (football in this case), they think that sardines (tasty morsel cheap stories) will be thrown into the sea (papers the next day). an apropos metaphor for today maybe?

I never understood the confusion over this quote. To me it seems to straight forward. The press are like squawking seagulls - flapping, pecking each other, desperately following something (Cantona) in case he throws them a tasty bit of food (a good quote for their paper, so they can get paid for writing the article about it). It's a perfect analogy, and I think that the press labelled it as "nonsense" due to them not wanting to reveal that Eric so beautifully called them a flock of scavengers.
