Instead of using rocks or pottery to help with your container drainage, try using a coffee filter.

  • If roots can grow through a coffee filter, than I bet this would be a GREAT addition to the SIP (sub-irrigation planter) method (globalbuckets) to help keep dirt out of the water reservoir while still letting water wick back and forth! (used in the wicking cup and on the flat surface with holes). I'll give it some thought or maybe someone will reply that already knows if this would be a good/bad idea.

  • coffee filters are so incredibly cheap, it's worth trying.
