  • And this one last: Mu Kalaignar Karunanidhi is said to have remarked that ARR is from minority community to which this honour attaches. But is it not true that ARR, a Hindu until the other day, went into that 'minority' by conversion (really voluntary) ?? Jews as a community grab most of the Nobel prizes, but some of them are enticed to become Xian, but the credit still goes to the Jews only.

  • Most TV channel film music contests project old tunes for the most part, because that is what appeals to Indians. Hence ARR's changing of the film music scene must be viewed in that perspective. He can and should undo the damage that several cine music makers have done in this way. It is possible to evolve a new style without a total discarding of the old idiom which afer all had a systematic evolution from purely classical-based tunes.

  • However, on a critical note, his music is mostly not hummable as are old tunes, a SERIOUS deficiency we hope he can and shd make up for, given his high musical mastery. Oscar has been given him due to those tunes that were more western than Indian, and no villager or urbanite can hum them, even though they have become a craze for listening in India what with high pressure sales strategy.

  • I would like to add my comments, taking the other part of the matter. ARR has achieved success in Tamil, Hindi and other films with his music, which is very remarkable since his music meant a break with the old cine music styles.

  • 2. Our PM has recently commented about poor quality education, without making bold to go into the above details. Politics has indeed killed our great cultural and educational standards. Democracy needs to be modified as our population is many times that of any other democracy (5 times that of US).

  • If university quality standards have to improve in India, teachers must be appointed solely with reference to merit and ability, not quotas. Students should be the best from each community, according to quotas, and corruption of issuing fake caste certificates must stop, besides capitation fees for professional courses. R&D labs are usually filled with men who are great politicking for promotions, than with any real motivation for their work.

  • If you are disappointed at or IgNoble performance, reasons are probably becz our schools and universities had to let go of this ambition, as "social justice", "affirmative action" (quota reservation), casteism, communalism, and such political trickeries drove us down to utter mediocrity, driving away even meritorios poor people. One billion plus, but not a single Nobel. But we are No.'One' in making movies for which we will institute our own awards. Time for deep introspection.

  • Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Cambridge, and other universities in the West, honour Nobel laureates who had gone through their portals (and even otherwise). Due to our lopsided values and hypocritical talk of excellence, we are unable to produce Nobels in our univs. In this situation it seems not a bad idea to award such doctorates to other greats in cine and political worlds.
