Just because someone is a CPA doesn't mean they're up to speed on taxation. CPA's like doctors and lawyers tend to specialize. Yes, they have to take continuing education courses to keep their CPA designation, but they may take courses on a plethora of accounting topics and they may not include tax.
Enrolled Agents on the other hand are all about taxation.
The overall advice on checking out a tax pro is valid. Especially the part about year round service.
