The Untold Story features the controversial aircraft that was a technological triumph for Britain, a world beating tactical, strike and reconnaissance aircraft years ahead of its time. Had it ever seen service it would have been the most powerful weapon in the NATO arsenal. And yet it was scrapped. Why? TSR2 - The Untold Story reveals the international intrigue and high stake politics behind the cancellation - and reveals how a £200,000,000 aircraft project was reduced to just £50,000 worth of scrap metal. When the project was scrapped - all film records of the aircraft were ordered destroyed. However, much was hidden away in secret. The makers of this unique film were given exclusive access to that hidden original film archive material. Much of this is in pristine condition and includes stunning air to air sequences of the TSR2 in flight, take offs and the first flight. Also featured are exclusive interviews with leading politicians of the time, senior RAF officers who were closely involved with the TSR2 programme and the chief test pilot.

  • " British governments not valuing a thriving aerospace industry"....What thriving industry of any description has any British government ever supported?

  • Exactly...I'm an American and I think it's appalling what Britain does especially when it comes to the aircraft industry. TSR-2, Vulcan, and of course Concorde are just some to mention. Britain was ahead of America in many ways...but they caved in to our suggestions...Such a bad idea on Britains part.

  • CF105,TSR2 and the B49 were scrapped because of orders from IDIOTS! I remember when McNamara suggesting 2 models of the F111, one version for the air force and one version for the navy. It did NOT work. General dynamics developed a titanium wing box when all that was wrong were the poor quality of the wing forging. When the quality was brought up to were it should have been all was fine. One of the problems with the F111 was engine unstarts caused by the disruption of air at the air intakes!

  • We are Britain! We are good at nothing, oh hold on we are world leaders in a couple of fields, Pull the plug, quick befor anyone notices we are good at something!

We treat our selves just the same now!

  • This is a typical story of how the british govenment behave in a disgraceful way to anything that is an a innovation and i have no doubt that the tsr2 would have been a ultimate success story if the government had continued to fund it they never have the vision and are always back biting and as been said before they are only focused on greed This is why alot of people who have the ability to create things move to the usa Because history has shown that they are willing to support new projects !

  • @Oldbmwr100rs There is a certain element of truth in what you have said here. This actually exposed itself with the development of Concord where the designed and technology behind it was being leaked to the Russians. That's why Concordski looked just like Concord, shame about Concordski crashing though.

  • @RRM22 We (Australia) still have the F111 in service, so quite possibly we would have still had the TSR-2 (or its final designation) in service too. The F111 was/is an extremely capable aircraft and despite the US retiring her, they still requested we deploy an F111 squadron in Iraq and Afghanistan for certain missions.

But I am sad that the TSR-2 never got a chance...

  • @Oldbmwr100rs I recently came across a film called "There never was an Arrow" about the plane, and sadly it's story parallels the TSR-2. Avro proposed it to the government at the time, built the plane and was in flight testing when the canadian government was changes at re-election,and surprise, it was the new "labour" party that went on the warpath to destroy every trace of the plane in much the same way. Seems that leftists have issues with people having pride in their country.

  • 0:34 I think its sad that he still doesn't understand what he cost Britain in terms of technical triumph. The government wonders why it has such an uninterested society. Every time the British people bring something to the world to be proud of such as this the TSR.2, Concorde, the Vulcan etc they take it away from us. You can only take so much away from society before it gives up on trying I think we've sadly reached that point :(

  • @Cubcariboo I once heard that the Avro company were full of KGB spies, and in fact many of the designs of the arrow ended up becoming the Mig-25. The Arrow production line was stopped on demand of the US government once the CIA had found out.

  • What an incredible aeroplane, if they had gone ahead I wonder if they would still be in service today?

And it just seems mad to spend most of the money getting so close, and then bin everything.

  • @Cubcariboo ..i though the same. remember a movie about Avro -Canada's Arrow. it was starring Dan Aykroid. i think the name was "the flight of the arrow"
